I couldn't help but think of parallels with DC's recent referendum on gay marriage: pushing intolerance in response to an imagined threat. I do have to say, having lived in Switzerland, that I found the Swiss unfailingly lovely (not that that speaks to deeper inclinations). I can say the same about the Turks (apart from the 'having lived there' part).
