Thursday morning roundup

Maybe a house with a basement wouldn't have been such a bad idea, but let's hope we never find out. South Korea's not taking any chances, and no one's complaining about freaking people out. Why do we have to protect people from reality? The television news industry certainly loves fear-mongering--why not make something constructive out of it and encourage preparedness?

On that note, would it benefit us, as a nation, to share the national security burden more broadly--financially, in this case?

Straight French people are choosing civil unions.

Kristof profiles an amazing woman.

Dionne on what moderate is.

Collins on tears and double standards. BTW, see Jon Stewart's excellent take on the matter.

Yesterday gave locals another reason--in addition to the musical assault--to have Christmas. And yet, I agree that there's a line of taste and respect in terms of letting people enjoy their religious holiday (just keep it out of my face for a month). If the message is, "this is what it feels like to have something you don't believe in shoved down your throat," then so be it.

Washingtonians are choosing public transit.
