Wednesday morning roundup

Bring on the accusations of socialism, but I think child nutrition programs and assistance to indigent refugees are a worthwhile use of federal funds.

The decline of the romantic comedy is a decline of wit and appreciation for language.

Britain's budget woes are about to herald a paradigm change in funding for the arts.

This writer-to-Carolyn has trust issues.

Yes, I, too, have found myself very, very frustrated with the romantic comedy as of late. I think I admired JULIE & JULIA just because it presented a different side of romance. But I've been complaining for awhile about the lack of interesting heroines and situations in romantic comedies. I think the fall of the indie system has a lot to do with this. Hollywood plays it safe, hires the same people for everything. And much like real life inbreeding the product getting produced becomes more and more inferior as generations wear on.

Also I think there's been a real gender stratification of movies since the 90s. I remember watching WHEN HARRY MET SALLY with my entire family. My father introduced me to HELLO DOLLY and MY FAIR LADY. Sadly, while my husband would watch SOME LIKE IT HOT or BRINGING UP BABY with me, there are very, very few current romantic comedies that I could convince him to go see in theater.

However, he's psyched for SCOTT PILGRIM, which I would argue is a smart romantic comedy with a male lead. I think that's what really upsets me. There doesn't seem to be any more good teamwork lately. Most romantic comedies have either a male lead or a female lead. One of the things I loved about ROMANCING THE STONE was that they were in it together.

S-word, have gone over my comment word allotment. Going to have to turn this comment into a blog post. New rule for the busy mom.

Best!
